1. What is a BMF Shallow Medium Filter? 

A BMF Shallow Medium Filter is a high-speed pressure filtration system that utilizes refined quartz sand as its primary media. Unlike traditional deep-bed filters, the BMF system features a unique spherical tank design and high-efficiency internal distributors.

This design allows for a much higher filtration velocity (30–45 m/h) within a smaller volume, effectively removing suspended solids (TSS), organic matter, and colloidal particles from industrial water sources.

 

2. How It Works: The Filtration and Backwash Cycle 

The BMF system operates in two distinct phases, usually managed by an automated controller:

2.1 The Filtration Process 

Raw water enters through the inlet manifold and is distributed evenly across the sand bed. As the water percolates through the fine quartz sand, impurities are trapped within the media pores. The clean, filtered water is then collected by "mushroom" diffusers at the bottom and discharged through the outlet.

2.2 The Automatic Backwash Cycle 

As debris accumulates, the pressure differential ($\Delta P$) increases. Once it reaches a set point (typically 0.05–0.07 MPa), the system triggers the backwash mode:

Filtered water from the other active tanks is diverted to flush the dirty sand bed in reverse.

The sand is fluidized, debris is washed away into the drain, and the process completes in just 90–120 seconds without stopping the overall system flow.
